The history of the lock and key dates back to several centuries BC. In approximately 600 B.C., the ancient Egyptians invented a lock operated by a bolt, catch, or lever, this bolt was moved by a device placed in the doorjamb, such as a ring-shaped pull. A mechanical key made from wood and metal was found with Roman artifacts indicating that locks with keys existed at least as early as the 2nd century AD. The first key used to open a padlock-type lock was found in the ruins of Nineveh, which is now located in present-day Iraq, it dates back to 700 BC and was made from wood and metal by ancient locksmiths. This wooden key has a hole in the center, surrounded by two bronze rings, these rings were twisted around each other when the key was inserted into the bolt hole of a door or chest. The first European reference to a key-type lock appeared on an Italian manuscript from 1100 A.D. at this time most non-military buildings utilized locks that incorporated bolts operated by wooden keys for locking purposes. Since the key was made out of wood, it could easily be broken if enough force were applied. Nonetheless, wooden keys remained in use for many centuries, metal keys began to replace them around the 1600s and 1700s. Metal locks made by locksmiths at this time utilized a lever or finger-operated rotary tumblers which required a special thin key made from either metal or hardwood to operate the lock. The first locksmith that utilized the pin tumbler mechanism was from Italy. These locks were a combination of two types, lever lock and slide bolt, their unique feature was the use of an iron bolt with elongated slots on each side and the key to this lock was a straight metal bar with notches.
