The chicken pho is simple yet elegant with its rich broth, rice noodles and tender meat. However, once you add the lovely array of fresh green herbs straight from Mai's own garden, bean sprouts, peppers and lime, this dish becomes magical, bright and soothing to the core.
The Mai's Sate with its ramen noodles and deep, savory beef broth has a glorious trifecta of chicken, pork and shrimp, and a good amount of heat from dried chilis for those who crave spice.
Mai rounds out her pho offerings with a vegetarian option featuring fresh crisp vegetables, silky tofu and a broth that leaves you feeling light on your feet.
Mai's appetizers are a fresh and flavorful prelude to any of her main dishes. The fresh spring rolls are a vibrant mix of herbs, vermicelli noodles, pork and shrimp wrapped in a delicate rice paper, accompanied by a sweet and tangy peanut sauce.
The crispy eggrolls are a true delight and a local favorite, each one lightly crisped and accompanied by large lettuce leaves and such herbs as mint, cilantro and sorrel, all intended to be folded around the eggroll itself to make an immensely herbacious, fresh and savory bite! They are served with a sweet, tangy chili dipping sauce, creating a heavenly flavor combination you will not soon forget.
To add some whimsy and drama to your table try the Grill-On-Fire; thin slices of ribeye, lemongrass shrimp, teriyaki chicken and tender pork grilled right at your table!
Or keep it light with Mai's incredibly flavorful and lively Chicken Cabbage Salad which is a truly textural delight with its carrots, daikon radish, cilantro, peanuts and crispy shallots, dressed ever so lightly in chili and lime juice with a hint of sweetness.
So as not to leave anyone out, Mai will make most any dish vegetarian upon request.
Mai's Cafe, traditional Vietnamese food with a Hawaiian flare, is well known among local Venturans and has carried its loyal following to their new location on Main st. in mid-town Ventura.
