If your house was built before 1990 then it most likely has a clay pipe leading from the house drainage system to a drain in the street. This pipe is called a fall. Clay falls also require periodic maintenance using tools such as a 'notcher' or 'header plate'. The notched is used to notch the walls of the clay pipe and remove any large lumps that may have formed around the outside. If left unchecked these lumps are very hard and time-consuming to remove. It also helps prevent your pipes from bursting. The header plate is used to make sure that your pipe is not crushed when digging your hole for a new fall or house drain flood proofing system. Eliminate the opportunity for roots from entering into the pipe. Make sure that your pipes are not buried in the ground beneath the frost line which can crack the pipe.
