Virginia Espresso was founded in 1995 by Larry Epplein, an admitted coffee nut, who had built, owned and operated ten restaurants in the previous 25 years, ranging from quick service to neighborhood bistro to fine dining. Epplein had his epiphany one day in the late '80's when he overhead a server in his restaurant responding to a customer who had ordered an espresso. "I'm sorry," said the server, "but our espresso machine is broken." Broken? thought Epplein. Not when he tried it! Turns out the server just din't want to make the espresso. He was afraid of the machine and had no confidence he could produce an acceptable drink.

When Epplein sold his last restaurant in the early '90's, he was determined to provide a service to food and beverage operators to help them, through expert equipment selection and training, make espresso drinks a significant profit center for their businesses. Today, Virginia Espresso provides equipment, supplies and service to hundreds of clients in central and southeastern Virginia and eastern North Carolina.
