Originally created in 1972. The once-vital hotspot of Spanish culture and cuisine's flame has been relit with the return of the original owner and chef, Jose Salgado
There’s been a Spanish Evolution of sorts unfolding at Embrujo Flamenco Tapas Restaurant. The once-vital hotspot of Latin culture and cuisine had cooled in recent years. But the flame’s been relit with the return of the original owner and chef, Jose Salgado.
Fueled by the same passion with which his father launched this Riverdale standout in 1972,(The original was on Bathurst Street) Salgado marks his homecoming with a renewed emphasis on the special restaurant’s food quality and Spanish roots. The Tapas concept that made Embrujo’s name gets fresh attention with this renewal, and a revised pricing structure returns the idea of fairness to the table full of small dishes that defines tapas. Among the tasty offerings in the reinvented menu, guests will find such classics as, Spanish tortilla, Gambas al ajillo, duck comfit, a selection of Spanish cured meats and, por supuesto, Paella.
And at Embrujo, which hits the street with the new name “Tapas at Embrujo” in late July, the dining experience is further enhanced by the lively presence of flamenco dancers. On Wednesday through Saturday, the restaurant hosts two dinner sittings in the company of these passionate entertainers. In its first week, acclaimed flamenco dancer Maria Serrano visits from Spain to perform her special magic.
It is with great pleasure that we reintroduce the new version of the old Embrujo. To those online reviewers who've been mystified of late to discover the restaurant doesn't have “the same vibe” it did, we say: come back, and remember why the only authentic Spanish tapas restaurant in the city is such a treat.
