Metaphora – The story behind the wine
Wine has long been a metaphor for the best life has to offer – a celebration of family and friends, momentous events, the ultimate symbol of living well. For Metaphora founder, Ravi Mehta, the meaning runs deeper: it is a playful pun in honor of his family: “Four Mehtas,” an homage to the art of winemaking that prizes the integrity of each bottle, and a philosophy of wine as the quintessential embodiment of joie de vivre, as represented by the Three Graces who appear on the label.
In Greek mythology, the Graces: Aglaia (Splendor), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Good Cheer), brought joy and goodwill to both gods and mortals — and, like a fine wine, presided over life’s happiest moments.
The Graces were rarely treated as individuals, but always together — a trinity — and this synergy is evident in every bottle of Metaphora. A meditation on wine as art, each vintage is handcrafted and made in limited quantities to ensure that quality is never compromised. We utilize the best grapes from Napa Valley’s most famed vineyards and are committed to excellence in winemaking.
Metaphora wines are crafted in the French tradition and intended for pairing with your favorite dishes. It is a dance in which both food and wine shine. A tradition of quality continues today in the hands of present winemaker, who places emphasis on the dynamic dialogue between fine food and wine. The core of the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit comes from a Howell Mountain vineyard in Napa Valley, situated on the outskirts of the town of Angwin. A portion of the Pinot Noir grapes were grown in the cool temperatures of the Carneros region, which borders San Pablo Bay. The other grapes are from the even cooler regions of Atlas Peak, which sits at an elevation of more than 2,000 feet. Metaphora wines are offered in 4 varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Rosé of Pinot Noir and Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The classic circular pose of the Three Graces is said to symbolize the three aspects of the gift: giving, accepting, and returning. And for Ravi, the realization of Metaphora is a gift. It is the culmination of his lifelong passion for wine and wine country, which led to a home in the hills of Napa Valley and the production of his own wine. Each bottle represents, for him, the unity of family and the deep joy of friendship — an expression of the way in which a good wine draws people together. The release of these personal, small-lot wines to the public is the completion of a circle. He believes the truly transcendent quality of wine is that it is best when shared, and hopes Metaphora wines will be a gift you share with those closest to you.
The Three Graces imbue every occasion with beauty, charm and inspiration, and so too does wine. Throughout history, it has been the expression of human happiness and joy. Central to the philosophy at Metaphora is the idea that wine is more than a beverage, and even the greatest wines are more than the sum of their parts. Wine is metaphor — the music in our lives, a time to pause and make each day a celebration.
