A SMALL HOBBY
One of Vienna's smallest cafes has survived because of the owner's enthusiasm and because it's too tiny to be anything else. Espresso Hobby has long been popular with locals with a weakness for
open-faced sandwiches and late 1950s design. There have never been many customers but always enough to fill the place. That's because of its unique size roughly the same shape and surface area
as a grand piano, although others would say a big ear. Still, it's big enough for all the ingredients of an authentic '50s espresso: red artificial leather, wood veneer, mirrors and indirect lighting.
Christian Göttlich took over the place in 2007 and has tried not only to preserve the unique atmosphere but also to correct a mistake or two that had been made over the years. It has been quite a task but a rewarding one, and the clientele has never been more enthusiastic. Göttlich stages music sessions, fills his espresso machine with fine coffee roasted in Austria, and runs the place in a highly professional manner - not like a "hobby" at all.
