Lower Haight Restaurant.
A partnership which began in August 2013 between Kate's Kitchen and Chaparral started with a simple conversation, Dinner.
Hassan Khader took over Kate's Kitchen twenty years ago and never utilized his restaurant at night until he met Thomas Martinez formally Executive Chef of Mission Beach Cafe. The two wanted to create a different identity for Kate's at night which became Chaparral. A name meaning "shrubland" indigenous to California, Martinez's cuisine is based on our local farms, ranches, and fisheries which he calls Seasonally Progressive Cuisine. Working under Chefs at Aziza, Greens, Bar Tartine, and with weeks "staging" at Saison, Coi, and Northern California farms is where Martinez feels he "grew up learning from brilliant artists and teachers who inspire me today".
Using modern techniques and creativity without losing the simplicity of his California Cuisine roots Martinez aims to bring affordable and casual fine dinning to Lower Haight, with no dish over 22 dollars.
With good late night food hard to find in San Francisco Chaparral is open late on Friday and Saturday! Serving "Moroccan Taco" Menus, inspired from street food in Martinez's travels of Morocco. Using a yeast risen dough which is hand laminated and stuffed with caramelized onions called Msemmem as the base for toppings like lamb kefta, spice marinated chicken, and roasted shiitakes all getting "the works" on top.
