Attracted by the nightlife of San Antonio, Café del Mar was the brainchild of Ramón Guiral, Carlos Andrea and José Les who arrived in Ibiza in 1978. They chose a location with the best sunset view on the island, overlooking the island of Conejera and complimented this spectacle with perfect background music. They then went overboard designing and decorating the location in outrageous baroque splendour. The emblematic architect they chose for their vision was the internationally renowned Catalan Luis Güell, who subsequently became famous for his unique creations of ‘space dedicated to leisure’. Much of his success stemmed from the design of the ‘Café del Mar’ with its clouds, eroticism and sensuality that combine so neatly with the sunset, the sea and the music.
Luis took barely a fortnight to come up with the inspirational design that is world renowned nearly 30 years later. From day one the bar was a huge success attracting people from all over the world as the ultimate meeting place.
The perfect sunset, accompanied by what proved to be the foundation stones of ‘ambient’ music - a fusion of classical music, blues and jazz - attracted world famous musicians intrigued by this totally di!erent style of Ibiza sound. Many later paid tribute to the ‘Café del Mar’ in their own music. Frank Zappa and Jon Andersson of ‘Yes’ and ‘Vangelis’ were often found at the bar, as was Mike Oldfield.
Ibiza, before it was the island with the liveliest nightlife on the planet, the world capital of dance sound, was the quintessential hippie universe, the lost paradise.
Ibiza invented peace before revelry, meditation before merrymaking, harmony before chaos and to being in sync with nature. The liberating Ibiza now permits the co-existence of one and the other. From the culture of noise and exhibition to that of tranquillity and relaxation, the eccentric and the concentric are all compatible.
The CdM is perhaps most known around the world for its chill-out music compilations. Demand for this ‘speciality’ sunset music pushed ‘Café del Mar’ into producing their own cassettes for eager punters, a chance for loyal customers to take a slice of CdM away with them, reminding them of the good times enjoying beautiful sunsets to the soundtrack of harmony. The creation of the Café del Mar music label was inspired – and spontaneously demanded – by the visiting public.
This was the starting point of the music label in reality in 1984. The first disc became internationally renowned and it encouraged people to enquire after this new age sanctuary. Following the great success of the first CD release in 1984, a total of 16 volumes of the main compilation series have since been published selling a total of about 9 million albums worldwide.
